Iceland, the Land of Fire and Ice, is one of the world’s most stunning natural destinations. From cascading waterfalls and erupting geysers to black sand beaches and glaciers, it offers unforgettable sights at every turn. If you’re short on time but want to see the best of Iceland, this 5-day itinerary is your ideal guide.
Day 1: Arrival in Reykjavik & Blue Lagoon
Fly into Keflavik International Airport and head straight to the Blue Lagoon, only 20 minutes away. Soak in the milky-blue geothermal waters surrounded by lava fields—it’s the perfect welcome to Iceland. Afterward, check in to your hotel in Reykjavik. Spend the evening exploring downtown, visiting Hallgrímskirkja Church, and dining at a cozy Nordic restaurant.
Day 2: Golden Circle Tour
Start early to drive the Golden Circle, Iceland’s most popular day route.
- Thingvellir National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can walk between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.
- Geysir Geothermal Area: Watch the Strokkur geyser erupt every few minutes, shooting hot water up to 30 meters.
- Gullfoss Waterfall: A thunderous, two-tiered waterfall that is both powerful and majestic.
On your way back, consider stopping at the Secret Lagoon, a less-crowded alternative to the Blue Lagoon.

Day 3: South Coast Adventures
Drive along Iceland’s scenic south coast and prepare for dramatic landscapes:
- Seljalandsfoss Waterfall: You can walk behind the falls—bring a rain jacket!
- Skógafoss Waterfall: A classic postcard view, especially beautiful with a rainbow.
- Reynisfjara Beach: Famous for its black sands and basalt columns. Don’t get too close to the waves—they’re powerful.
End your day in the town of Vik, where you can stay overnight in a guesthouse or cabin.
Day 4: Glacier Hike & Jökulsárlón Lagoon
Drive farther east to reach Vatnajökull National Park, home to Europe’s largest glacier. Join a guided glacier hike on Skaftafell, a surreal experience walking on ice with crampons and an ice axe.
Continue on to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where massive icebergs float in a crystal-clear lake. Right across the road is Diamond Beach, where ice chunks wash up on the black sand, sparkling like jewels.
Day 5: Return to Reykjavik & Explore Locally
Head back west toward Reykjavik. You can stop at local farms, lava fields, or small museums along the way. Once in the city, take a whale-watching tour from the harbor or enjoy a final Icelandic meal at a seafood restaurant. Try dishes like arctic char or lamb stew.
Tips for Travel:
- Best Time to Visit: June to September (mild weather), or late winter (Feb–Mar) for Northern Lights.
- Rent a 4×4 car if visiting in winter or exploring remote areas.
- Pack layers—weather changes rapidly in Iceland!
